Salesforce CPQ End of Sale: What It Means and Your Options

If your company quotes with Salesforce CPQ, the end-of-sale announcement requires nothing today, but it does call for a calm decision before the gap with what the business needs grows.

Salesforce CPQ End of Sale: What It Means and Your Options

CPQ (configure, price, quote) is the module a sales team uses to build offers with products, discounts and approvals. Salesforce announced that CPQ has moved to end of sale. Before reacting, it helps to read precisely what Salesforce itself says, and what it does not.

One clarification: Cyrrus does not resell licenses or receive commissions from any vendor. That is why we can compare without preferences.

What does “end of sale” mean according to Salesforce?

Salesforce titles its page “End of Sale (Not End of Life)”: CPQ is no longer sold to new customers, but it is not end of life. Current customers can keep using it, add users, renew licenses and receive support under their contracts, including critical fixes. CPQ moves into a maintenance phase, with no new features. Salesforce states it has not announced an end-of-life date and that there is no forced migration.

Which product replaces CPQ?

Salesforce names Revenue Cloud Advanced, part of the Revenue Cloud suite, as CPQ's successor. Revenue Cloud Billing is a complementary product for billing and collections. The same page says about 15% of Revenue Cloud Advanced customers migrated from CPQ, that a typical migration takes 3 to 6 months (longer for complex implementations) and that partner migration tools exist. These are Salesforce's figures about its own product: we report them as stated, without independent verification.

What options does a company using CPQ have?

Three routes and what to validate before choosing
RouteWhat it involvesWhat to validate
Stay on CPQ for nowKeep the current product, with support and critical fixes, no new featuresWhich business needs it no longer covers, and whether your contract and renewal plan allow it
Migrate to Revenue Cloud AdvancedMove to the successor Salesforce names, with the work of redesigning the catalog and pricing rulesScope, timeline, cost of migrating what you customized and which partner will run it
Switch quoting platformAssess another tool, such as HubSpot's or Dynamics 365'sWhether it covers your pricing rules, approvals and ERP integrations, and the multi-year total cost

How do the alternatives compare?

HubSpot offers CPQ within Revenue Hub: its page says it requires a Professional or Enterprise seat, and covers products with flat or tiered pricing, quote templates, approvals, e-signature, payments from the quote and contracts. Dynamics 365 Sales handles quotes with a product catalog, families, bundles, price lists and discount lists; its pricing engine supports a standard set of methods, and custom logic is coded with plug-ins. Neither is a one-to-one replacement for CPQ: what matters is whether it covers your specific rules.

What should management ask?

Four things. First, which pricing, discount and approval rules you use today and which are truly needed. Second, what you customized in CPQ and which systems (ERP, billing, portals) depend on it. Third, the multi-year total cost of each route, using the logic of how much it costs to implement an enterprise system, including data migration and training. And fourth, the best timing: renew, migrate or switch without stalling the quarter's sales close.
