Morelco: a work-from-home model for field crews, in the middle of the pandemic
Morelco (now Cumbra), an infrastructure projects company, worked with Cyrrus in 2020 to move its field staff to a new work-from-home model without losing their quality of life. In one month of intervention across people, processes and technology, high ergonomic risks fell 36%, physical symptoms fell 10%, and home workspace conditions improved 54%.
The challenge
Morelco lives by its projects: infrastructure works of national interest, usually in remote, hard-to-reach regions. Its people were used to spending long stretches on site.
When the pandemic hit, the company had to demobilize its project staff. People had no setup at home to work, and the operating model they knew stopped working overnight.
What Cyrrus did
- People
Quality of life as the project's goal
The starting point wasn't technology but people: keeping them well while their way of working changed completely.
- Processes
A new way to organize the work
Site rotation was rethought: from three months on the project and two weekends home, to a few weeks on site every month or two.
- Technology
Real conditions to work from home
The tools to operate remotely and an improved home workspace for each person, with their ergonomic risks measured before and after.
- Adoption
Change management
A complete change of life for people used to working on site. The support aimed for a model that would last, not one that was merely announced.
Results
- 36% fewer high ergonomic risks within one month of intervention.
- 54% improvement in the physical conditions of the home workspace.
- 10% fewer physical symptoms among employees.
- A model the team itself endorses: “today they tell us: this works.”
In the client's words
“We came to Cyrrus for something that was strategic and vital for us: keeping our people's quality of life during the pandemic.”
