Odoo vs SAP Business One: the real differences for choosing
Odoo and SAP Business One often reach the same shortlist, but they follow different philosophies: one is modular and open source at its core; the other is a closed product from one of the biggest brands in enterprise software.

When a midsize company compares Odoo with SAP, it's almost always comparing Odoo with SAP Business One, SAP's solution for small and midsize businesses. SAP S/4HANA, SAP's ERP for organizations of all sizes, plays in a different league of scope and cost.
A disclosure before we continue: Cyrrus doesn't resell licenses or take commissions from any vendor. That's why we can compare without preferences.
What is the difference between Odoo and SAP Business One?
The underlying difference is the model. Odoo is a modular suite with an open-source Community edition under the LGPLv3 license and a paid Enterprise edition with additional features. SAP Business One is a proprietary SAP product that is bought, implemented and supported through partners, and runs on SAP HANA or Microsoft SQL Server.
| Criterion | Odoo | SAP Business One |
|---|---|---|
| License | Community: open source (LGPLv3). Enterprise: paid license | SAP proprietary |
| Published price | Yes: Standard US$7.95 and Custom US$13.40 per user/month (annual billing); one app free | No; quoted through a partner |
| Deployment | Odoo cloud; Odoo.sh and own servers on the Custom plan | Cloud or own servers |
| Customization | High: Odoo Studio and development on the code | Moderate, on a standardized product |
| Main risk | Over-customization and reliance on the implementer | Total cost and reliance on the partner |
Prices quoted are list prices in US dollars published by each vendor, checked in October 2026. They change often and can vary by country, currency and negotiation.

Is Odoo cheaper than SAP Business One?
On licenses, usually yes: Odoo publishes prices from US$7.95 per user per month on its Standard plan, while SAP Business One is quoted. But total cost isn't just the license. Implementation, data migration, integrations, customizations and support often weigh more, and a heavily customized Odoo implementation can end up costing more than planned.
That's why it's worth comparing the five-year total cost for the same scope. We explain it in detail in how much it costs to implement an ERP.
When does Odoo make sense?
It makes sense when the company values flexibility, wants to start with a few modules and grow, has processes that don't fit a rigid standard well, and has a solid implementer who knows how to say no to unnecessary customization. Keep in mind the Standard plan doesn't include multi-company or Odoo Studio: that requires the Custom plan.
Choosing well is half the journey
After the selection we manage the implementation as an external PMO and work on adoption from day one.
- Project management accountable for the result
- Built-in change management

When does SAP Business One make sense?
It makes sense when the company prefers a more standardized product, from a widely present brand with a long-established partner ecosystem, and when its processes fit well with the practices the system ships with. Also when the parent company or customers value working with SAP.
How do you decide?
With your critical processes in writing, a weighted evaluation matrix and a guided demo of your real cases in both systems. And by asking each implementer for three references from clients of your size and industry that you can talk to.
